Pakistan and China have signed an agreement for construction of a 1,200 MWe Hualong One (HPR1000) reactor at unit 5 of the Chashma NPP in Pakistan’s Punjab province. China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) President Wang Yongge and Muhammad Saeedur Rehman from the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU). Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was also present alongside Chinese Charge d’Affaires Pang Chunxue.

The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) has granted an operating licence for unit 3 of the Karachi nuclear power plant, the second of two Chinese-supplied Hualong One reactors at the site.

Unit 3 at Pakistan’s Karachi NPP (Kanupp) in Sindh province has been inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. This is the second China-supplied 1,100 MWe Hualong One reactor to begin operation at Kanupp. The new unit represents an investment of $2.7bn and was built as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) initiative.
