Hitachi announced today it will end its business operations on the Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant construction project, which it had suspended in January 2019 "because it was clear that further time was needed to decide on a financing structure". Horizon Nuclear Power, the UK project developer that Hitachi acquired in November 2012, said it will now take steps for the "orderly closing down" of all its current development activities, but will "keep the lines of communication open" with government and other key stakeholders regarding future options at both its sites, which in addition to Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, include Oldbury on Severn in South Gloucestershire.

Horizon Nuclear Power today outlined the procedure it will follow now that its new-build projects have been suspended. The UK subsidiary of Japan’s Hitachi said it had made substantial progress with its plans to provide at least 5.4 GWe of new capacity across two sites - Wylfa Newydd, in north Wales, and Oldbury-on-Severn, in southwest England - by deploying Hitachi-GE UK advanced boiling reactors (UK ABWRs).

Decommissioning of the UK's Wylfa nuclear power plant on the island of Anglesey will begin in the new year. The plant will be closed by 30 December, after 44 years of operation.

UK-based Horizon Nuclear Power has signed an agreement with the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), which allows it to start purchasing major equipment for its planned ABWR nuclear power plant at Wylfa in Wales.
