The Joint Venture to develop new nuclear build at Sellafield, NW England, “NuGen,” has finally been established. Three companies - GDF Suez , Iberdrola and Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) – teamed together to buy 190 ha (470 acres) land at Sellafield from the NDA in 2009. The consortium paid an upfront payment of GBP19.5 million, with a further payment of at least GBP50.5 million to follow in the next six years.

GE-Hitachi senior vice president, nuclear plant projects Daniel Roderick speaks about finishing the NRC's application for its ESBWR reactor design, and the company's plans about returning to Europe. Although the company is bullish about Europe, Roderick admits that new-build prospects in the USA have withered.

The world’s first AP1000 is now under construction in China. On 19 April, the first concrete was poured at the Sanmen site in southeast Zhejiang province where two of the 1100MW Westinghouse-designed reactors are to be built.
