Energoatom and Holtec International are planning to build a plant in Ukraine for the production of containers, which are currently made in the USA, for storage of used nuclear fuel. The two already have joint plans for the construction of a plant in Ukraine to manufacture equipment for Holtec small modular reactors.

The international community is to provide up to EUR1.1 million (USD1.1 million) for the procurement of essential fire safety equipment at the Chernobyl exclusion zone in Ukraine. Ukraine told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 19 May that new wildfires in the area near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) did not pose a radioactive threat to people, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said. Ukraine said the gamma dose rate levels in the vicinity of the Chernobyl NPP were “not exceeding the reference levels”.
