Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a consortium agreement with Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN), Canada’s Candu Energy and Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare, to jointly support refurbishment of unit 1 at Romania’s Cernavoda NPP. The refurbishment will extend the operational life of the reactor, which was commissioned in 1996. The 700 MWe Candu-6 has a design life of 30 years and the current operating licence is set to expire by the end of 2026.

Romanian nuclear utility SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN) has selected Candu Energy (part of Canada’s SNC-Lavalin Group) to carry out additional pre-project work for the Candu reactor at unit 1 of the Cernavoda NPP. This is in preparation for extending its operating life. As part of a $65m two-year agreement, SNC-Lavalin will perform long-term engineering and front-end engineering services to prepare the future refurbishment project at Cernavoda 1, which will extend its service life by another 30 years to 2060.

Plant’s life could be extended to 2060 The Cernavodă nuclear power station in Romania has two Candu 6 units. Curtesyy Nuclearelectrica. Candu Energy, part of the Canada-based SNC-Lavalin Group, has won a $65m contract to carry out pre-project work for the lifetime extension of Unit 1 of the Cernavodă nuclear power station in southeast Romania.

The work is in preparation for the upcoming Cernavodă-1 refurbishment project, which would see the plant’s operating life extended to 2060.

Candu Energy specialists will carry out design and procurement engineering work needed for design modifications and recommendations arising out of a “condition assessment” for the refurbishment of Unit 1. The company will also design new infrastructure and buildings needed to support reactor retubing activities.

Within the project, SNC-Lavalin will work with Italian power engineering company Ansaldo Nucleare, which will supply engineering services for the balance of plant activities. Other key supporting organisations include US-based Sargent and Lundy, Romania’s CITON and General Electric Steam Power, who are expected to supply engineering services associated with the refurbishment.
