Canada-based AtkinsRéalis (part of the SNC-Lavalin Group) has opened its new $20m AtkinsRéalis Technology Center (ATC) in Richland, Washington state. AtkinsRéalis said the ATC will be used to further develop “innovative nuclear and environmental cleanup technologies, engineering net zero (ENZ) and hydrogen clean energy advancements, digital solutions and robotics implementation”.

US nuclear fuel developer Lightbridge Corporation has completed work in collaboration with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to support the development of Lightbridge Fuel. The work was carried out under the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) voucher programme.

The US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Office of Nuclear Energy said on 29 July that the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Analysis and Measurement Services Corporation (AMS) had recently completed testing of sensors for small light-water reactor systems. The performance data will be shared with US nuclear companies to improve sensor instrumentation for advanced light-water small modular reactors (SMRs). The data could also be leveraged to support other advanced reactor types cooled by gas, liquid metal or molten salt.

US Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) said on 24 August that Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) had initiated contract negotiations with a team led by Bechtel National Inc (BNI) to support the design and build phase of the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR). The BNI team also includes TerraPower and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.

The US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has announced six new collaborations with industry on projects to advance commercial nuclear energy technologies. Meanwhile, the DOE has announced separate funding solicitations for USD14 million for research into fusion energy and USD18 million for transformative energy technologies.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected a second group of projects to receive funding under its Office of Nuclear Energy's programme for cost-sharing to develop innovative, industry-driven reactor designs and accompanying technologies. Nine projects will receive almost $20m for cost-shared research and development for advanced nuclear technologies.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $16m in funding to help businesses "move promising energy technologies" from the DOE's national laboratories to the marketplace. DOE said on 21 June that the round of funding through its Technology Commercialisation Fund (TCF) will support 54 projects at 12 national labs involving 52 private-sector partners and involve projects including nuclear reactors and uranium mining development. All projects selected for the TCF will receive an equal amount of non-federal funds to match the federal investment.
