US President Joseph Biden yesterday announced a USD2 trillion jobs, infrastructure and clean energy plan to reshape the country's economy. Among the proposed investments to tackle climate change, the American Jobs Plan calls for funding for the development of advanced nuclear reactors and for a clean electricity standard to leverage and incentivise more efficient use of the USA's existing fleet of reactors.

The US Department of Energy’s Loan Programs Office (LPO) encourages project developers to engage early in order to "shape transactions so that they ultimately become bankable", and to feel reassured that engagement with the LPO is a "life-of-the-loan partnership", Douglas Schultz, director of Loan Guarantee Origination for the LPO, told delegates at the New Nuclear Capital 2020 virtual conference last week.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) was formed in 1977 to direct national nuclear programmes; help resolve energy challenges resulting from America’s loss of ability in 1970 to recover enough oil to meet demands; and reduce atmospheric pollution from combustion of fossil fuels.
