Norway’s Minister of Trade and Industry Iselin Nybø and US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm have signed a letter of intent to develop a method that will ensure that Norwegian highly enriched uranium (HEU) can no longer be used for nuclear weapons, and which makes it suitable for storage and disposal.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) and Norway’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance a cooperative project to eliminate all of Norway’s highly enriched uranium (HEU) by downblending it to low-enriched uranium. The MoU calls for downblending activities to begin in 2022 using Norway's existing infrastructure, followed by the eventual deployment of the DOE's Mobile Melt-Consolidate system.
