The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced funding of $26m for groups of university, non-profit, and private-sector partners that will work with communities interested in storing and disposing of used nuclear fuel. Under its consent-based siting policy, DOE said that, along with these consortia, it will continue working with communities to ensure transparency and local support. This follows DOE’s first update to the Consent-Based Siting Process for Federal Consolidated Interim Storage of Spent Nuclear Fuel in April.

NuScale Power on 31 August announced the opening of the second-of-three planned NuScale Energy Exploration (E2) Centres in collaboration with the University of Idaho at the Centre for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), located in Idaho Falls. The E2 Centre at CAES, to be known as the SMR Simulator Laboratory, will assist the research of CAES entities: Idaho National Laboratory, Boise State University, Idaho State University, and University of Idaho, and allow users to assume the role of control room operator to learn about the innovative features and functionality unique to NuScale’s SMR technology.

A new facility opened by NuScale Power in collaboration with the University of Idaho at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES), in Idaho Falls, Idaho, will enable users to take on the role of control room operator to learn about the innovative features and functionality unique to NuScale’s small modular reactor (SMR) technology. Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems (UAMPS) this week said work in preparation for a licence application is progressing at the site where it plans to build a NuScale SMR plant.
