Japan, the UK, Canada, the US and France have agreed to co-operate to reduce dependence on Russia as a supplier of nuclear materials and technology. Their statement was issued at the Nuclear Energy Forum being held in Japan’s Sapporo alongside the meeting of Group of Seven (G7) ministers on climate, energy and environment. As the Western nuclear industry flounders, Russia’s Rosatom is building nuclear power plants (NPPs) on time and under budget around the world, while selling uranium to the US, according to Professor Thane Gustafson. His article, on “The Devil’s Dance” substack blog, says Russia has world-beating nuclear power technology that is flourishing thanks to booming exports. The article, originally released in May, has now been reproduced in several other publications and a link provided on Gustafson’s Twitter page.

The first equipment has arrived at a deconversion plant being built by Russia's Rosatom and France's Orano in eastern Siberia. The plant is part of a long-term project to manage and make use of depleted uranium stocks in Russia.

Iraq is working on a plan to build nuclear reactors in face of widespread blackouts that have sparked social unrest, Bloomberg reported on 8 June. Despite being OPEC’s second biggest oil producer, Iraq is suffering from power shortages and insufficient investment in ageing plants, and needs to meet an expected 50% jump in demand by the end of the decade. Building NPPs could help to close the supply gap.

Russia’s Electrochemical plant (ECP) (part of Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL) said on 7 April that it is building the second depleted uranium hexafluoride (DUHF) processing unit in Zelenogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). The commissioning of the W2- EKhZ unit, scheduled for 2023, will double the capacity of the enterprise for processing DUHF from 10,000 to 20,000 tons a year.

According to Tass, specialists will replace 24 steam generator modules at the 560 -MW plant as part of a project to extend its service life until 2040. The unit began commercial operation in November 1981. Work will also include inspection of the reactor, turbine equipment and security systems.
In April 2020, Russia’s nuclear regulator Rostekhnadzor granted a licence for Beloyarsk-3 to operate until 2025. The BN-600 is the only fast breeder reactor that has operated for 40 years.
A second plant at the Beloyarsk site, the 820-MW BN-800 fast breeder reactor Beloyarsk-4, began commercial operation in October 2016.
