Nuclear energy, as an asset class, has the potential to report well against a wide range of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data collection and accounting metrics, according to a new report from the Generation IV International Forum (GIF). This should allow nuclear energy to be considered as an investable asset class, thereby allowing nuclear companies and projects to access climate finance.

Brazil’s nuclear utility, Eletronuclear, on 25 February published in the Official Gazette (Diário Oficial da Uniao), a tender for a company to resume the civil works at the partly completed unit 3 of the Angra NPP, and to carry out part of the electromechanical assembly. This aim is to accelerate the plant's progress and to press ahead with some construction activities before hiring a contractor to undertake work to complete the construction of the plant. The contract is expected to be signed by May. First concrete is now scheduled for October and hiring of the general contractor for the second half of 2022. Eletronuclear is a subsidiary of state-run electric utility Eletrobras, which the government plans to privatise, although the nuclear power unit will be spun off and remain under state control.

Leonam Guimaraes, president of Brazil's state nuclear power company Eletronuclear, told Reuters that Brazil plans to complete the delayed unit 3 at its Angra NPP in partnership with either China's National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), France's EDF or Russia state nuclear corporation Rosatom.

Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque said on 23 January that Brazil hopes to complete its third nuclear plant by 2026, with the help of private investors. Construction of Angra 3 has been suspended since 2015.

19 Jan (NucNet): Construction of the Angra-3 nuclear power reactor in Brazil could resume in the second half of 2018 as long as an agreement is reached to increase the tariff for energy generated by the plant from around 222.18 Brazilian reals (BRL) (€64, $69) per MWh, which is below the BRL 224 per MWh paid for electricity generated by Angra-1 and Angra-2, the president of nuclear operator Eletrobras Eletronuclear said.

The supply of Russian radioisotope products to Brazil has allowed the Brazilian government to reduce by half the costs of inputs that help diagnose and treat various cancers, according to Jair Mengatti, production director of Brazil's Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN). Over the past years, IPEN, the main producer of radiopharmaceuticals in Brazil, has had problems getting inputs such as Iodine-131, now 100% imported from Russia. "Up until the end of last year, our supplier was from Canada, but after the bidding process, we went to Russia for our supplies. We saved around $100,000 a week," he said.
