Following a recent contract awarded by the European Space Agency (ESA), Belgium’s Tractebel has been selected to head the consortium of PULSAR, a research and innovation project funded by the European Commission to develop nuclear technology to power space missions.

Tractebel will lead the PULSAR consortium conducting research on dynamic radioisotope power systems (RPS) fuelled by plutonium-238 (Pu-238) for space applications - to provide spacecraft and astronauts with electricity and heat when the sun does not supply enough power.

Her comments came following a summit of the bloc’s 27 member states after which French president Emmanuel Macron also spoke on the nuclear issue, saying, “never before has such clear and broad support been expressed for the need to use nuclear energy to achieve our climate goals”.
Mr Macron recently announced that by 2030 France, which generates a bigger share of its electricity from nuclear than any other country, must be a leader in carbon-free power production with one small modular reactor in operation and nuclear plants used to produce clean hydrogen through electrolysis.
Ms von der Leyen said that while the EU must drastically reduce its CO2 emissions to combat climate change, “it is obvious that we need more renewable and clean energy”.

The challenges the nuclear industry faces are largely external and must be overcome if it is to help tackle the existential threat of climate change, panellists in the Nuclear Energy and its Future session of the Reuters Next conference on 11 January said. These challenges include: the notion nuclear is an out-dated technology; the cost of finance; market design; political changes; perceived competition with renewable energy; and the public's misconceptions about radioactive waste.

As policymakers grapple with the twin challenges of climate change and a post-COVID economic recovery, the benefits of nuclear power are clearer than ever, but the industry still has some way to go in addressing perceptions of its alleged drawbacks with cost, safety and radioactive waste. Switzerland’s National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) has compared the advantages and disadvantages of sites for a used fuel/high-level waste encapsulation plant. The resulting report, “High-level waste encapsulation plant: Advantages and disadvantages of different siting variants”, will serve as a basis for discussion with the regions, Nagra said.
