The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its latest report, Electricity 2024, dedicates a significant amount of space to nuclear power – a departure from its previous studies which treated it as peripheral. In its press release on the new report, IEA says the increase in electricity generation from renewables and nuclear "appears to be pushing the power sector's emissions into structural decline". Over the next three years, low-emissions generation is set to rise at twice the annual growth rate between 2018 and 2023. Global emissions from electricity generation are expected to decrease by 2.4% in 2024, followed by smaller declines in 2025 and 2026.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) legal experts have delivered the Agency’s first-ever short introductory course on nuclear law for university students, as part of a pilot partnerships concluded between the IAEA and six universities in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Jamaica, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It was held at Khalifa University in the UAE and was attended by students from different academic disciplines, as well as officials and representatives of the University faculty. This is the first course in a series, with five more universities to follow as hosts of this course in the coming months.

Six countries have entered into a partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to increase education and professional development opportunities for students and aspiring professionals in international and national nuclear law. IAEA-supported programmes on nuclear law will be held at universities in Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Jamaica, South Africa and the UAE.

Its primary mission was to foster ongoing cooperation, communication and exchange of information among the world’s nuclear societies, serve as a global NGO in nuclear matters of international importance, and represent the views and positions of nuclear professionals.

Nuclear energy provides enormous opportunities to bring about a fast, cost-effective and just decarbonisation, World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y León said yesterday in a COP26 event titled The Role of Nuclear Energy in a Net-Zero Future. Innovations in technologies - such as small modular reactors (SMRs) - and new ways of financing projects will help nuclear play its role in decarbonising the world, participants said.

China's two biggest state-owned nuclear power operators on 17 March a joint venture (JV), Hualong International Nuclear Power Technology Co, to export their Generation III Hualong One nuclear power reactor. The JV, based in Beijing is an equal joint venture between China General Nuclear Power Corp (CGN) and China National Nuclear Corp (CNNC). The company chairman is CGN's Zou Yongping and the general manager is CNNC's Xu Pengfei.
