The first unit at the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in Turkey is now entering the commissioning stage, with the aim of it supplying Turkey's energy system in 2025, Rosatom says.

Russia’s annual International Forum on Nuclear Energy, Atomexpo, which was recently held over two days in Sochi on the Black Sea coast set a record for the number of participating countries. Atomexpo-2024 organised by Rosatom, was held at the Sirius science & arts park in Sochi. The Sirius Federal Territory was established in 2020 has a special status and management system with an experimental legal regime. The forum attracted more than 4,500 people from 75 countries.

JSC Ruspolimet in Vyksa (Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region) has shipped the lead transport and packaging container TUK-137T.A1 manufactured for the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkiye. The equipment was manufactured by Ruspolimet for Tekhsnabexport (Tenex), Rosatom’s sales and trading division.

Two horizontal steam-heater separators (a component of the steam generators) are being delivered from Russia for unit 1 of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkiye. The initial part of the journey involved transportation along the frozen Neva River, accompanied by three icebreakers and two tugboats.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, during a five-day visit to Russia, signed agreements with Russia for additional units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The agreement was signed following a meeting with Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Head of the Ministry of Industry & Trade Denis Manturov.

The Council of the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK) of Turkiye has issued a commissioning permit for unit 1 of the Akkuyu NPP to project company Akkuyu Nukleer, part of Rosatom. The application was sent to NDK in two stages. The first set of documents was submitted to NDK on 17 March and the second on 24August. These included a comprehensive package confirming the readiness of the unit for commissioning.

The first shifts of personnel have begun pre-licensing training using a full-scale simulator in the new building of the training centre at the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkiye. Practical experience on a simulator is the final stage of the training programme for plant personnel, Natalya Shulepova, project director at the Rosatom Technical Academy, explained. “After completing the training, Akkuyu Nuclear JSC employees will have to pass certification exams to obtain a licence from the Turkish Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NDK),” she said.

The reactor pressure vessel (RPV) has been delivered by Rosatom to the construction site of the Akkuyu NPP under construction in Turkiye, following a 3,150 km voyage by sea. The RPV is a vertical cylindrical vessel with an elliptical bottom, which will contain the core, devices for control and protection systems of the reactor, structural elements for to control the nuclear reaction and to transfer thermal energy to the coolant. The RPV, which weighs 347.5 tonnes in shipping packaging, is 11.45 metres long and 5.7 metres wide. It was manufactured at the Atommash plant, part of Rosatom’s mechanical engineering division.
