In his Spring Budget UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said the Government would class nuclear energy as environmentally sustainable in its green taxonomy, to give it access to the same investment incentives as renewables. "Increasing nuclear capacity is vital to meet our net-zero obligations. So, to encourage private sector investment into our nuclear programme, today I confirm that subject to consultation nuclear power will be classed as environmentally sustainable." He said this will give nuclear power the same "investment incentives" as renewable energy and will driver further public investment. The taxonomy had been delayed by the Government at the end of 2022 arguing that another year was needed clarify and put it into law.

The UN climate summit in November "must be the COP that consigns coal power to history" if the world is serious about achieving the 1.5 degree limit set by the Paris Agreement, COP26 President Alok Sharma said last week. In response, the UK's Nuclear Industry Association (NIA) said that nuclear energy is the best low-carbon baseload replacement for coal, while US Special Presidential Climate Envoy John Kerry highlighted the development of small modular reactors.

Climate scientist James Hansen has warned UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson that his government's decision not to block plans for a new coal mine in Cumbria, in the North West of England, means the country risks humiliation as the host of COP26. BBC cites concerns over Chinese involvement in reactor plans There are plans to build two Generation III EPR units at Sizewell. Courtesy EDF Energy. The decision by Japanese company Hitachi to pull out of plans to build a new nuclear power station in Wales “may accelerate government approval of a new station at Sizewell C” in Suffolk, BBC News reported, citing “government and industry sources”.

The BBC said the government taking a stake in the project to build two Generation III EPR units at Sizewell is one option being considered as it looks to “replace China’s CGN [China General Nuclear] as an investor”.

France’s EDF and CGN are 80% and 20% shareholders in the Sizewell C project. The cost of the project has been estimated at £18bn, although this has not been confirmed by either EDF or CGN.

After Sizewell C, CGN was set to build it’s a single HPR1000, or Hualong One, reactor design at Bradwell in Essex, but BBC News cited sources saying this idea “‘looks dead’, given revived security concerns and deteriorating diplomatic relations” between London and Beijing.

The HPR1000 is a China-designed 1,100-MW Generation III pressurised water reactor which incorporates elements of China’s ACP1000 and ACPR1000+ reactor designs.
