The lifting of economic sanctions against Iran remains an essential part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPoA) and its signatories are committed to expanding the special purpose vehicle that enables European businesses to maintain trade with the country, according to the European Commission's foreign affairs spokesperson Peter Stano.

The USA will waive its sanctions on nuclear cooperation with Iran, allowing Russian, Chinese, and European companies to continue their work at Iranian nuclear facilities, US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said in a statement on 31 October. However, Ortagus also said new sanctions had been placed on Iran's construction sector.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report on 16 January confirming that Iran had honoured commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed last July following extensive negotiations between Iran and the E3+3 group (UK, France, Germany, the US, Russia and China). The JCPOA set limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors on 15 December closed its investigation into whether Iran once had a nuclear weapons programme. The decision, reached by consensus, ended a 10-year investigation into Iran's nuclear programme, following Western allegations that the programme had military dimensions and the imposition on Iran of every more stringent economic sanctions.

On 21 October, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei finally endorsed Iran's nuclear accord with world powers in a letter to President Hassan Rouhani. Khamenei said he appreciated the work of Iran's diplomats in reaching the 14 July Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the international agreement limiting Iran's nuclear programme in return for the lifting of economic sanctions.

The International Atomic Energy Agency reports that Iran 'has taken the initial practical measures that were foreseen' in the Framework for Cooperation that was agreed between the two parties in November. The Agency also announced it has reached agreement with Iran on seven new practical measures to be implemented by 15 May 2014.
