As long as Iran continues to implement its nuclear related commitments, as it is doing so far, the European Union will remain committed to the continued full and effective implementation of the nuclear deal, the EU's High Representative and Vice-President Federica Mogherini said yesterday. "We fully trust the work, competence and autonomy of the International Atomic Energy Agency that has published ten reports certifying that Iran has fully complied with its commitments," she said.

US President Donald Trump on 13 October refused to certify the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran signed in July 2015 by Iran and the E3/EU+3 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK and the USA) and implemented in 2016.  He said the new US strategy would "deny the Iranian regime all paths to a nuclear weapon". Trump’s administration said Iran had sought to "exploit loopholes and test the international community’s resolve" regarding JCPOA. However, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Yukiya Amano told the agency's Board of Governors in September that Iran was implementing the deal as agreed. In response to the   Trump’s decertification decision, the IAEA confirmed that Iran has adhered to the deal.

Iranian officials and a visiting European Union (EU) delegation headed by European Union Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini on 16 April signed various memoranda of understanding for cooperation on research. Iran's participation in the EU Horizon 2020 framework programme was also discussed, Iranian media reported. The European commission, and the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) issued a joint statement on cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy which would include establishment of a regular high-level dialogue meeting once a year (the Framework for Partnership on Nuclear Energy) to review topics of common interest in the nuclear field.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released a report on 16 January confirming that Iran had honoured commitments to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), agreed last July following extensive negotiations between Iran and the E3+3 group (UK, France, Germany, the US, Russia and China). The JCPOA set limits on Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial sanctions.
