Two nations working together on a number of nuclear projects The Russia’s MBIR multipurpose fast neutron research reactor is under construction in western Russia. Couurtesy Rosatom. China and Russia have announced a long-term deal to continue developing fast-neutron nuclear power reactors and closing the nuclear fuel cycle.

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom said the agreement was signed on 21 March on the sidelines of the state visit to Russia of China’s president Xi Jinping.

The document was signed by Rosatom director-general Alexey Likhachev and Zhang Kejian, chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority.

Fast neutron reactors are said to offer more efficient use of uranium resources and the ability to burn actinides – chemical elements which are otherwise the long-lived component of high-level nuclear waste.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, global interest in fast reactors has been growing since their inception in 1960 because they can provide “efficient, safe and sustainable energy”. Their closed fuel cycle – a fuel cycle that reuses spent fuel – can support long-term nuclear power development as part of the world’s future energy mix and decrease the burden of nuclear waste.

The head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI), Mohammad Eslami, has said that construction of a new research reactor in the central city of Isfahan will begin in the coming weeks. One of its tasks will be to test nuclear fuel for other reactors. nuclear fuel test for other reactors. He made the announcement during a visit to the Uranium Conversion Facility (UCF) at the Isfahan site.

Generation IV unit will help efforts to close nuclear fuel cycle Rosatom director-general Alexey Likhachev at the inaugural event on 8 June. Image courtesy Tvel. Russia began construction on Tuesday of the Brest-OD-300 pilot demonstration power plant with pouring of first concrete at the site of the Siberian Chemical Combine in Seversk, southwest Siberia, Russian nuclear fuel manufacturer Tvel said.

Brest-OD-300 is a 300-MW Generation IV lead-cooled fast reactor that will run on mixed uranium-plutonium nitride fuel specifically designed for the purpose.

The plant is part of a pilot demonstration energy complex which comes under Russia’s Breakthrough project for the development of closed nuclear fuel cycle technology.

A closed nuclear fuel cycle means spent fuel is reprocessed and partly reused. Closing the nuclear fuel cycle would ease concerns over limited uranium resources and contribute towards making nuclear energy sustainable over the long term.
