Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) plan to leverage data gathered through decades of experience of the storage of used Candu fuel to underpin cooperative research activities under a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. They will engage in knowledge-sharing and other joint activities to advance storage, transportation and disposal practices for used fuel, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on nuclear decommissioning and waste management initiatives.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced a collaboration agreement with US-based Kairos Power, which is working to develop and license fluoride salt-cooled small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The agreement is funded through CNL's Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI) programme and will cover research and engineering of technologies to separate, analyse and store tritium generated through the reactor's operation.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation (USNC) has established a new facility in Salt Lake City to support the development of the company's proprietary Fully Ceramic Micro-encapsulated (FCM) fuel.

Materials developed at the new facility will be used in the company’s micro-modular reactor (MMR) and other nuclear reactors, including gas-cooled reactors, light water reactors, Candu reactors, and molten salt cooled reactors.
Salt Lake City was selected partly because the region is home to significant ceramics and materials expertise, central to the manufacturing of FCM fuel. The Salt Lake City Lab augments Ultra Safe’s materials development efforts at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and collaborations with the Chalk River Laboratories.
FCM is a next-generation Triso particle fuel design, replacing the 50-year-old graphite matrix of traditional Triso fuel with silicon carbide (SiC), a material used in tank armour that is extremely resistant to radiation and thermal damage. Triso, a shortened form of the term tristructural-isotropic, refers to a specific design of uranium nuclear reactor fuel.

Regulators must explore the possibility of harmonising international requirements for advanced and small modular reactor design evaluation and licensing, Rumina Velshi, president and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), told delegates at the Advanced Reactors Summit VII held in Knoxville, Tennessee yesterday. In August last year, Velshi and US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Chairman Christine Svinicki signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to expand the agencies' cooperation on activities associated with advanced reactor and SMR technologies.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) is working towards the future of nuclear by enhancing existing technology; developing advanced technologies, such as small modular reactors (SMRs); and assessing how all low-carbon technologies can be integrated within 'microgrids', CNL President and CEO Mark Lesinski said today. The use of hydrogen for microgrids is CNL's "highest aspiration, the Holiest Grail", he told delegates at the International Conference on Climate Change and the Role of Nuclear Power being held this week at the International Atomic Energy Agency's headquarters in Vienna.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) announced on 2 April that isotope production reactor the National Research Universal (NRU) at the Chalk River site had been permanently shut down. It will now be placed into a "state of storage" prior to decommissioning. The reactor, which produced about 40% of world supply of molybdenum-99 (Mo-99), ceased production in October 2016, since when it has remained on standby "in case of a significant shortage which could not be mitigated by other means". Research reactors in Australia, Europe, Russia and South Africa have since met demand.
