The UK’s Joint European Torus (JET) in Culham near Oxford, which closed at the end of December 2023 after 40 years of operation, “has demonstrated the ability to reliably generate fusion energy, whilst simultaneously setting a world-record in energy output”, according to the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA).

Construction has started on the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility-Demo Oriented NEutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) project in Granada, Spain. The facility will test materials for use in future fusion power reactors. Spain and Croatia are project leaders, with Spain funding 50% of all construction costs and 10% of operating costs, and Croatia responsible for 5% of each.

Construction of General Fusion's Fusion Demonstration Plant (FDP) at the UK Atomic Energy Authority's (UKAEA's) Culham Campus near Oxford, England, is expected to start later this year following the granting of planning permission by the South Oxfordshire District Council Planning Committee.

Scientists at the US Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) have obtained some initial results from their investigations into cubes of uranium which were part of Nazi Germany’s nuclear weapons programme, the American Chemical Society (ACS) reported on 24 August. Brittany Robertson, a doctoral student who works at PNNL will present the work at ACS Fall 2021 meeting.

The 28th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC), which is being held on-line from 10-25 May, has attracted a record 3,400 attendees, including both full participants and observers. The conference organisers include the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), and the ITER Organisation and the week-long programme takes full advantage of a powerful web platform.

The UK government announced this week its invitation to local communities to put forward proposals to host the country's prototype fusion energy power plant. The successful site will be home to the construction of STEP - the Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production - that is targeted for completion by 2040. At a media briefing ahead of the government's announcement, Professor Ian Chapman, CEO of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, explained why this is an exciting prospect for the whole world.

The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Organisation on 15 October signed a Cooperation Agreement with the Canadian government, which sets out terms for the transfer of Canadian-supplied nuclear material (tritium), and tritium-related equipment and technology.

For the first time ever, through the Broader Approach agreement, a scientific partnership signed between Europe and Japan, experts have successfully measured the amount of tritium in the metal dust on walls similar to those of ITER, F4E announced. This will help scientists develop models to calculate the quantity of tritium that will be retained in the ITER Vacuum Vessel and improve several aspects of safety.
