World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

On the 140th anniversary of the start of its activities, Edison has presented a development strategy to 2030 and its ambitions to 2040 – “Edison 140 years – Towards 2030-2040”. The portfolio of activities to 2030 will see renewable electricity generation represent over 45% of the group's profitability, services to industrial and domestic customers and the public administration will contribute approximately a quarter, gas and thermoelectric production will represent 30%. Looking to 2040, Edison says it “has the ambition of developing new nuclear power if the conditions are created for his return to Italy”.

Nuclear could provide up to 150 GWe of generating capacity by 2050 in the European Union, according to a statement issued by 16 European countries following a meeting in Paris with European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson. The so-called Nuclear Alliance called on the European Commission to recognise nuclear energy in the EU's energy strategy and relevant policies.

Group of Seven (G7) energy and environment ministers, following a two-day meeting in the northern Japanese city of Sapporo, issued a 36-page communique laying out their commitments ahead of a G7 summit in Hiroshima in May. The detailed statement covered sections on environment, climate and energy. It reaffirmed a commitment to accelerating the clean energy transition to net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. “We call on and will work with other countries to end new unabated coal-fired power generation projects globally as soon as possible to accelerate the clean energy transition in a just manner,” the statement says, stipulating that countries should rely on “predominantly” clean energy by 2035.

Italy is a steadfast partner in the challenges facing the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) today with a long history of achievements in the nuclear field, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi commented, as he travelled to Rome. During his two-day visit, Grossi met with Italy’s President and Foreign Minister, as well as with Pope Francis. Discussions covered a variety of issues including nuclear safety and security in Ukraine, nuclear non-proliferation, and the role of nuclear science and technology in combating climate change.

Ireland’s European commissioner Maireád McGuinness is moving closer to classifying nuclear energy and gas as having a role to play in the transition to climate neutrality as an energy price crisis consumes the European Union, the Irish Times reported.

The European commission is preparing to release the second part of its so-called sustainable finance taxonomy, which determines what activities are eligible for funding by green bonds, and therefore billions of euro in budget and Covid-19 stimulus cash directed towards the EU’s goal of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

France and a number of other member states have lobbied intensely for nuclear energy to be classified as green, but the inclusion of nuclear has been resisted by other countries, including Italy and Germany, which has almost completed a planned phaseout of its nuclear plants begun in response to the 2011 Fukushima-Daiichi accident.

“Member states will travel on different paths in order to reach the goal of climate neutrality by 2050,” Ms McGuinness said in a statement to The Irish Times. She added that €350bn in additional investment would be needed annually to reach the EU’s aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55 per cent by 2030.
