USA-based engineering group Jacobs has been selected by Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) to support decommissioning efforts at its damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The announcement came as the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there had been "remarkable progress" in decommissioning the site.

Decarbonising heat will be essential for global emissions reduction efforts in the coming years, Aiden Peakman of the UK Nuclear Innovation and Research Office told a high-level joint workshop held by the International Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Current generation light-water reactors and next-generation advanced reactors could significantly help in decarbonising the heat sector, he said.

The nuclear industry, both in the UK and internationally, is "changing rapidly and is facing significant challenges", the UK's Office for Nuclear Regulation says in its Strategic Framework for International Engagement to 2025. The report, published on 14 May, is therefore a "living document" that will be reviewed annually "to reflect the evolving international and political context and its changing priorities", it says.

Japan is turning to international experts for help with decommissioning its nuclear power plants. Kirill Komarov, first deputy director general for development and international business at Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on 26 November that Rosatom is ready to offer Japan the entire spectrum of services and technologies in the back-end of nuclear fuel cycle.

In mid-October nuclear safety experts concluded a 10-day mission to peer-review the UK Nuclear Regulator: Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Nuclear Directorate (ND).
