Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak have signed a strategic partnership to expand cooperation. Through the partnership, Sweden and the UK further strengthen cooperation on security and defence. The strategic partnership with the UK is a political declaration of intent in line with Sweden’s obligations under EU law. It also applies to a large number of areas where Sweden and the UK see the benefits of increased cooperation, such as innovation, research, green transition and trade and investments.

In July 2021, World Nuclear University launched a two-week virtual course, the Strategic Leadership Academy (SLA), designed to equip the next generation of nuclear leaders with the technical knowledge and leadership skills to prepare nuclear power plants for long-term operation (LTO).

Government policies should recognise the potential of nuclear energy if the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals are to be achieved, World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y Léon told the Asian Business Leadership Forum (ABLF). Speaking at ABLF's Sixth Conclave, which was held on 9 March, Bilbao y Léon set out her vision of how nations can maximise the use of nuclear power to help achieve the SDGs.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has welcomed the nuclear industry into its debate on the policy responses required to address climate change and sustainable development. Today, UNECE's Expert Group on Resource Management (EGRM) held a session titled The role of nuclear energy resources in sustainable development as part of UNECE Energy Week 2020.

The nuclear industry has merely scratched the surface of the flexible benefits of nuclear power, according to panellists in a conference held this week ahead of the 11th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM11). The CEM11 side-event, Flexibility in Clean Energy Systems: The Enabling Roles of Nuclear Energy, included high-level speakers from the International Energy Agency (IEA), the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as government officials from Canada, the UK and the USA. Hosted by Saudi Arabia, CEM11 will take place on 22 September.

The United Nations' climate talks this year can be a moment where the world comes together to ramp up momentum towards a climate-resilient, zero-carbon economy, COP26 President Designate Alok Sharma told UN Member States at the organisation's headquarters in New York on 6 March. Sharma, who is also the UK secretary of state for business, said it was time to "send out a message of ambition and hope, that decarbonisation is the future, with huge opportunities for those who are willing to act now" and that the transition to a zero-carbon economy must be "fair and inclusive".

“Uranium 2016: Resources, Production and Demand”, known as the Red Book, jointly published by the OECD’s Nuclear Energy Agency and the International Atomic Energy Agency, says global uranium resources are more than adequate to meet projected requirements for the foreseeable future, regardless of the role played by nuclear energy. This is the 26th edition of the Red Book, and provides analysis and information from 49 producing and consuming countries.
