Romanian nuclear utility Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica (SNN) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have signed a loan agreement worth €145m ($159m) to support completion of Europe’s first Tritium Removal Facility (CTRF) at the Cernavoda NPP. The CTRF will remove the tritium from reactor’s coolant and moderator (heavy water), leading to increased protection of the environment, public and employees’ occupational health and safety.

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has signed a contract worth KRW260 billion (USD200 million) to construct a tritium removal facility at Romania's Cernavoda nuclear power plant site. The facility will use technology developed by Romania.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Japanese company Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd (KF) to partner on the delivery of technical services to support the growing international fusion reactor market, with a key focus on testing related to tritium.

The UK's First Light Fusion plans to build a 60 MW pilot power plant based on its unique projectile fusion technology to prove the integrated engineering for electricity generation and the production of tritium. It has partnered with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) to design a system for extracting tritium from the reactor.

After leaving the Iter project in 2003, Canada has now signed a cooperation agreement with the ITER Organisation for the transfer of Canadian-supplied tritium, and tritium-related equipment and technology. The agreement follows the signing in April 2018 of a Memorandum of Understanding to explore how Canada could participate in the project to construct the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor.
