The European Commission (EC) has approved development by Belgian Research Centre (SCK-CEN) and the Liège-based Centre for Metallurgical Research (CRM) of an advanced smelter for metal from dismantled NPPs. SCK-CEN said the furnace will encourage the creation of a circular economy in nuclear dismantling, by enabling more metal to be re-used than it currently possible using established smelting technologies.

A record number of 31 disused sealed radioactive sources (DSRSs) have been transferred from Chile to a recycling facility in Europe as part of an International Atomic Energy Agency multi-regional project to enhance nuclear security and radiation safety.

Russia's TVEL and the Belarusian Organisation for Radioactive Waste Management have entered into a long-term cooperation agreement covering the creation and development of infrastructure for the final isolation of radioactive waste in Belarus, as well as training personnel for the operation of a near-surface waste disposal facility.

The US Administration has issued a new report, “US Innovation to Meet 2050 Climate Goals: Assessing Initial R&D Opportunities,” setting out initial priorities that will enable it to reach net-zero by 2050. The 26-page White House report identifies five initial priorities to help the USA meet the goal of cutting greenhouse gases by 50-52% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero no later than 2050. These are:

The European Parliament's environment and economy committees have voted against the inclusion of gas and nuclear in the EU's list of environmentally sustainable investments. The vote, which was indicative of mood rather than having a direct impact, comes three weeks before all MEPs hold their vote to accept, or oppose, the European Commission's plan.
