The UK Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency have confirmed that the UK Hualong Pressurised Water Reactor (UK HPR1000) is suitable for construction in the UK, subject to the necessary licensing, planning permission and environmental permits. The annoucement follows completion of their in-depth assessment of the nuclear reactor design.

The UK's Environment Agency (EA) has published its assessment so far of the UK Hualong One pressurised water reactor (UK HPR1000) as it invites public comment on this proposed new reactor design. The UK HPR1000 is the Hualong One design that General Nuclear Services (GNS) - a subsidiary of EDF and China General Nuclear (CGN) - proposes to use at a prospective new nuclear power plant in Bradwell, England.

The UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has completed Step 3 of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) of China General Nuclear Power Corporation’s (CGN’s) UK HPR1000 design.

The ONR said in a statement that step 3 of the GDA process took “a more detailed” assessment of the reactor design by focusing on the methods and approaches used by the applicant General Nuclear System (GNS).
China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) and EDF Energy, through their joint venture company GNS, wrote to regulators requesting the GDA process in October 2016. It began in January 2017.
Step 2 of the GDA process was competed in November 2018. At that stage, the ONR considered the safety and security of the design and the UK Environmental Agency considered its environmental acceptability.

The UK has opened for consultation its assessment of a new financing model aimed at reducing the cost of new nuclear power plant projects by having consumers pay upfront through their energy bills. A solution is needed urgently because nuclear energy is seen as a vital part of the government's commitment to cutting the country's carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Seven of the UK’s eight existing nuclear plants are set to be retired by 2030.
