US-based TerraPower has submitted its construction permit application to the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the Natrium reactor demonstration project. This is the first application to NRC for construction of a commercial advanced reactor.

US-based Oklo has completed the second phase of the Thermal Hydraulic Experimental Test Article (THETA) testing campaign in collaboration with the US Argonne National Laboratory (ANL). THETA is a sodium fixture with instrumentation installed at ANL’s Mechanisms Engineer Test Loop (METL) facility.

US-based TerraPower has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the UAE’s Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) on the sidelines of COP28 to explore opportunities for the commercialisation and global deployment of Terrapower’s Natrium technology. “Bringing advanced nuclear technologies to market is critical to meeting global decarbonisation targets,” said TerraPower President & CEO Chris Levesque. “TerraPower and ENEC are leading the way in deploying nuclear plants, and this agreement allows us to share our expertise and design experience, and explore the opportunity for deployment of Natrium reactors around the world including additional locations in the United States.”

US power utility Southern Company, TerraPower and Core Power have started pumped-salt operations in the Integrated Effects Test (IET), as a step towards development of Generation-IV molten salt reactor technology, namely TerraPower’s first-of-a-kind Molten Chloride Fast Reactor (MCFR).

The US and Japan are undertaking a joint project to perform transient tests on fast reactor fuels. The experiments are part of a four-year cost-shared facility sharing initiative between the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) under the Civil Nuclear Energy Research and Development Working Group. The experiments will use a device developed by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) that can test advanced reactor fuel experiments in its Transient Reactor Test (TREAT) Facility.
