Collaboration between the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), Dell Technologies, Intel and the University of Cambridge is underway to advance the development of the UK’s prototype fusion power plant. Scientists and engineers plan to access supercomputers and AI (artificial intelligence) to inform and accelerate engineering designs of the UKAEA’s STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) facility. UKAEA says the engineering designs of STEP, sited in Nottinghamshire, “will be developed in a highly immersive and connected virtual environment, known as the ‘Industrial Metaverse’”.

The US Administration, through the Department of Energy (DOE), has announced funding of $1.5 billion from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act to build and upgrade the US national laboratories. The resources will upgrade scientific facilities, modernise infrastructure, and address deferred maintenance projects at the laboratories managed by DOE’s Office of Science.

Finland’s Posiva Oy has launched a project for modelling the groundwater chemistry in the bedrock of the site for the final disposal of used nuclear fuel far into the future using one of the most efficient computers in the world. Posiva, which is responsible for the final disposal of used nuclear fuel, is jointly owned by Finnish nuclear utilities Fortum and Teollisuuden Voima Oyj. “This is probably the most demanding modelling of groundwater chemistry to date, anywhere in the world. The goal of the project is to verify the balancing of long-term safety with economic sustainability. This will open the way to industrial final disposal far into the future,” Posiva noted.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) said on 17 August that the UK programme to deliver fusion energy had been given a boost by a new collaboration with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Under the collaboration, STFC and UKAEA will launch a Centre of Excellence in Extreme Scale Computing in Fusion, located at STFC’s Hartree Centre, at its Daresbury Laboratory in the North West of England.

Scientists at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in the USA have released a new design for a compact fusion reactor that can generate electricity and help define the technology necessary for commercial fusion power, General Atomics (GA) said on 29 March. The approach is based on the “Advanced Tokamak” concept pioneered by the DIII-D program, which enables a higher-performance, self-sustaining configuration that holds energy more efficiently than in typical pulsed configurations, allowing it to be built at a reduced scale and cost.
