Lithuania’s State Enterprise Ignalina NPP (INPP) has developed a general concept for the construction of a geological disposal facility (GDF) with assistance from Finnish waste management company Posiva Solutions Oy, a subsidiary of Posiva, under a one-year contract signed in January 2022. Posiva has developed Finland’s GDF at Olkiluoto, which is expected to begin operations in the mid-2020s – the world’s first such facility.

The EU needs nuclear power and gas as stable sources of energy while it manages the transition to a low-carbon economy, European commission president Ursula von der Leyen said.

Her comments came following a summit of the bloc’s 27 member states after which French president Emmanuel Macron also spoke on the nuclear issue, saying, “never before has such clear and broad support been expressed for the need to use nuclear energy to achieve our climate goals”.

Mr Macron recently announced that by 2030 France, which generates a bigger share of its electricity from nuclear than any other country, must be a leader in carbon-free power production with one small modular reactor in operation and nuclear plants used to produce clean hydrogen through electrolysis.

Ms von der Leyen said that while the EU must drastically reduce its CO2 emissions to combat climate change, “it is obvious that we need more renewable and clean energy”.

In a review of Spain's energy policy, the International Energy Agency (IEA) says the country should consider the usefulness of nuclear energy, including for non-electricity applications, for diversifying technical options to achieve long-term carbon neutrality by 2050. Under Spain's current policy, operation of its fleet of seven nuclear power reactors will be phased out by 2035. The country aims to generate all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050.

Finland must ensure appropriate management of all existing and future radioactive waste, regardless of its origin, producer or production method, a working group set up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment (TEM) has said. Meanwhile, another working group has made recommendations for improving the investment of assets under the country's nuclear waste management fund.
