USA-based engineering group Jacobs has been selected by Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) to support decommissioning efforts at its damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan. The announcement came as the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said there had been "remarkable progress" in decommissioning the site.

Japan is turning to international experts for help with decommissioning its nuclear power plants. Kirill Komarov, first deputy director general for development and international business at Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom said on 26 November that Rosatom is ready to offer Japan the entire spectrum of services and technologies in the back-end of nuclear fuel cycle.

The commercial start-up of Japan’s Rokkasho reprocessing plant has suffered a further delay. On 30 January its owner, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd (JNFL), filed an application with the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to change its construction plan, pushing the scheduled completion date of the plant back to August 2009.
