A new large-scale ventilation system, also known as the Safety Significant Confinement Ventilation System (SSCVS) is being commissioned at the US Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). When completed and online, the SSCVS facility will significantly increase airflow to the WIPP underground areas. WIPP is the only US deep geological salt repository for defence-related transuranic (TRU) waste. Workers have begun testing the first set of electrical cables that will supply power to SSCVS mechanical equipment, such as motors, fans and massive air filtration units.

Kairos Power says its Engineering Test Unit (ETU) in Albuquerque has become the largest FLiBe system in the world. Kairos commissioned the plant in partnership with Materion Corporation to produce high-purity fluoride salt coolant – known as FLiBe – a eutectic mixture of lithium fluoride and beryllium fluoride.

Testing is underway at an electric-powered microreactor prototype developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE). The 12-foot-tall machine is a full-scale replica of the Department’s Marvel microreactor, which is being built to advance new reactor technologies. Marvel will be the first new reactor at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in more than four decades and is aiming to be operational in 2025.

The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has completed its final environmental impact statement (FEIS) on Kairos Power’s application for a permit to build a test version of the company’s Hermes advanced reactor design in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. NRC staff recommended that the permit should be issued. The staff will submit the FEIS and the final safety evaluation report (FSER), which was completed in June, to the Commission for the mandatory hearing phase of the licensing process. Following the hearing, expected to take place later this year, the Commission will vote whether to authorise the staff to issue the permit.
