Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will increase collaboration in peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, particularly in agriculture and medicine. This was agreed during a two-day trip to Pakistan by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Grossi discussed a range of issues including IAEA support in agriculture and medicine as well as nuclear safety and security.

Of the 220 research reactors in operation today, only seven are on the African continent. In other words, with 17.2% of the world population and the strongest expected growth in the coming years, Africans have access to only 3% of the world's nuclear research reactor capacity. Marguerite Leonardi, senior advisor at NPC Consulting & Engineering, and Professor Vincent Lukanda Mwamba, Commissaire Général of the Commissariat Général à l’Energie Atomique, explain why that is a concern and why the research reactor in Kinshasa should be restarted urgently.

The Middle East’s first major international research centre for science application research, SESAME, will be inaugurated on 16 May in Jordan. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on 11 May that it will serve scientists from across the region and beyond researching the peaceful uses of nuclear technology. IAEA has been closely associated with the project and is an observer on the SESAME council. The facility will foster innovative scientific and technological research in areas ranging from biology, archaeology and medical sciences to studying the basic properties of materials science, physics, chemistry, and life sciences.

Kuwait’s Ministry of Electricity and Water has dropped plans to build a NPP, citing cost concerns, the Kuwait Times reported on 24 August .The ministry decided to retract the plans because studies proved it was unfeasible and too expensive and because alternative energy sources, such as wind and solar power, were more cost effective. Earlier in August, Russia expressed an interest in helping the kingdom develop its nuclear power sector.
