Following talks in Budapest, Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, and Hungary’s Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade Peter Szijjártó confirmed that work on the construction of new power units at the Paks NPP (Paks II) is proceeding at a rapid pace. The Paks II project was launched in 2014 by an inter-governmental agreement between Hungary and Russia for two VVER-1200 reactors (units 5&6) to be supplied by Rosatom. The contract was supported by a Russian state loan to finance the majority of the project.

Thirty-five years on from the Chernobyl accident, Ukraine and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have highlighted their commitment to cooperation in nuclear power. Meanwhile Ukraine’s nuclear regulator has launched the start of operations at a new storage facility for used nuclear fuel at the Chernobyl site.

The cost of used nuclear fuel management at the Belarus nuclear plant is estimated at $2.5-3.5 billion, according to responses to the environmental report on the strategic environmental assessment of the plant’s draft management strategy, Belta reported on 30 January.
