China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has opened ten of its key nuclear technology research facilities and testing platforms to the world for the first time to encourage international cooperation. These include the new-generation Huanliu-3 (HL-3) tokamak; the world's highest-energy compact proton cyclotron accelerator, the Beijing Radioactive Ion-beam Facility (BRIF); one of the world's six major neutron sources, the China Advanced Research Reactor; the Beishan Underground Research Laboratory (URL); the Minjiang Test Reactor for medical isotope research; the Swimming Pool Reactor; a Miniature Neutron Source Reactor; a Thermal & Safety Hydraulics Test Reactor; a Seismic Simulator & other Qualification Facilities; and the Wind Tunnel Featured Nuclear Environment Simulation Facilities.

China's new-generation tokamak, Huanliu-3 (HL-3), has made significant progress operating in high-confinement mode (H mode) under a plasma current of 1 million amperes for the first time, China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) announced. The experiment took place at CNNC’s Southwestern Institute of Physics (SWIP) in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It is not clear whether this refers to the HL-2M tokamak, which was commissioned at SWIP in December 2020 as an upgrade of the earlier the HL-2A or whether this is a further upgrade.

Germany-based NUKEM Technologies has delivered equipment and related services for a spent ion exchange resin treatment plant at China’s Zhangzhou NPP in Fujian Province. NUKEM was contracted by AEROSON Corporation in 2021 to supply two conical dryers for the treatment of spent resins, including the design, engineering, manufacture, testing and quality assurance of the dryers and their ancillary equipment, as well as the supplier's scope of supply and services.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on 18 August that Iran’s nuclear programme and activities were fully in line with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and its Safeguards commitments. Khatibzadeh noted in a statement that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has been supervising Iran’s nuclear activities and that Tehran had notified the IAEA of its measures in advance.

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Switzerland has completed acceptance testing of Russian-made niobium-tin superconductors manufactured under the framework of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) CERN Conductor Development Programme, Rosatom’s Fuel Company TVEL said on 16 June. The design of the superconducting strands and the technology for their manufacture were developed at the AA Bochvar Institute of Inorganic Materials (VNIINM) in Moscow, while the 50km long qualification batch of strands was manufactured at the Chepetsky Mechanical Plant (CMP) in Glazov, Udmurt Republic (both part of TVEL). The work was completed as part of the agreement between TVEL and CERN, and was based on successful test results.

After a decade of design and fabrication, US-based General Atomics said on 15 June that it is ready to ship the first module of the Central Solenoid to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) under construction in Saint-Paul-lès-Durance in southern France. Despite the challenges of Covid-19, ITER is almost 75% built and massive first-of-a-kind components have been arriving in France from three continents over the past 15 months. Construction of ITER is funded mainly by the European Union (45.6%) with the remainder shared equally by China, India, Japan, Korea, Russia and the USA (9.1% each). However, in practice, the members deliver little monetary contribution to the project, instead providing ‘in-kind’ contributions of components, systems or buildings.

Nuclear energy's high load factors and reliability could make achieving net-zero affordable, according to a special report, “Nuclear for a decarbonised future”, published on 2 June by Barclays. The 34-page report says, “Nuclear is safer than commonly assumed, and new technology and further research could make it even cleaner, safer and cheaper. This could pave the way for a greater contribution to the global energy transition.”

Iran's President Hassan Rouhani on 10 April unveiled 133 new nuclear achievements in the provinces of Tehran, Markazi, Isfahan, Alborz and Qom to mark the 15th anniversary of the National Nuclear Technology Day. In a ceremony held via videoconference he gave the order for Iranian scientists to begin injecting uranium hexafluoride gas to a pilot cascade of 164 new generation IR6 centrifuges at the Natanz enrichment facility. He also announced that Iran has started mechanical testing of IR-9 centrifuges and launched an assembly line for their production.
