Japanese utility Kansai Electric Power Company is implementing timely measures for the safe long-term operation of unit 3 at its Mihama nuclear power plant, a team of International Atomic Energy Agency experts has concluded. The team also provided recommendations and suggestions to further improve the safe operation of the unit beyond 40 years.

South Korea is to co-operate with the US in optimising nuclear proliferation resistance in its research reactors for export. A joint statement issued by the Korean Ministry of Science & ICT and the US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said the two countries plan to collaborate on designing research reactors and associated facilities developed by Korea under NNSA's Proliferation Resistance Optimization-X (PRO-X) programme.

Bulgaria’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency (AYaR - Agentsiyata za Yadreno Regulirane) has licensed the use of Westinghouse fuel for unit 5 of the Kozloduy NPP. Loading of the new fuel, which has already been delivered to the site, will begin during the next scheduled repair and maintenance outage, due to begin at the end of April. The first 42 cartridges of the new American fuel arrived at Kozloduy NPP by ship from Sweden, where they were manufactured.

World leaders gathered in Brussels at the first ever Nuclear Energy Summit co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Belgium Alexander De Croo and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Mariano Grossi. The Summit was the highest-level meeting to date exclusively focused on the topic of nuclear energy. It followed inclusion of nuclear energy in the Global Stocktake agreed at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai in December 2023 and the launch of the IAEA’s Atoms4NetZero initiative.

Bulgaria’s National Assembly (Parliament) has ratified the intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in nuclear energy, signed in February between Bulgaria and the US. The agreement was supported by 149 deputies of the parties of the ruling majority. Some 50 opposition representatives voted against it.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Pre-SALTO (Safety Aspects of Long Term Operation) review mission has completed a review of long term operational safety at unit 1 of the Cernavoda Nuclear NPP at the request of plant’s operator, SN Nuclearelectrica (SNN). Cernavoda 1 went into commercial operation in 1996. It is one of two 700 MWe Candu-6 pressurised heavy water reactors at the NPP. SNN is planning to refurbish the reactor and extend the total operating lifetime to approximately 60 years.
