NNWI wants to improve understanding of atomic energy and its ‘far-reaching applications’ File photo of construction at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station in England. Courtesy EDF. A London-based pro-nuclear think-tank is launching an initiative to explore how nuclear science and technology can help achieve the 17 UN sustainable development goals by the target date of 2030.

New Nuclear Watch Institute (NNWI) said the ‘Yes to Nuclear Perspectives’ initiative is backed by Belgium-based nuclear consultancy Nuclear-21, the Nuclear Innovation Alliance and World Nuclear Transport Institute.

The sustainable development goals were set by the UN general assembly in 2015, the same year that COP21 led to the signing of the Paris climate agreement by almost 200 countries.

The Paris agreement’s goal is to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The Fukushima-Daini nuclear power station in northern Japan. Water overflowed from spent nuclear fuel storage pools at the Fukushima-Daiichi and Fukushima-Daini nuclear power stations operated by Tokyo Electric Power Company following an earthquake that struck off the coast northeastern late on Saturday night.

The pools are at the Unit 5 and 6 reactor buildings at Fukushima-Daiichi, which are being decommissioned, and the Unit 1 reactor building at Fukushima-Daini, which is set to be decommissioned.

According to the Nuclear Regulation Authority, it has been confirmed that no water leaked outside the buildings and cooling of the nuclear fuel at the two Fukushima stations has not been affected.

The International Atomic Energy Agency said it had been informed by the NRA that there was no damage to the two nuclear stations, or to a third at Onagawa, which is to the north of Fukushima in Miyagi prefecture.
