Westinghouse and Energoatom signed a contract in September 2020 for the supply of VVER-440 nuclear fuel for the Rovno nuclear power station, which has two VVER-440 and two VVER-1000 pressurised water reactor units in commercial operation.
Energoatom said the Westinghouse-made fuel needs to be licensed under Ukrainian local regulations before it can be used at VVER-440 reactors in the country.

The Group of Seven (G7) countries will lead a technology-driven transition to net zero, according to a joint statement at the end of their three-day summit in Cornwall, England. The G7 is an inter-governmental political forum consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the USA. Unit 1 of the Taishan nuclear power plant is operating at full power and there has been no release of radiation at the plant or in the surrounding area, China General Nuclear (CGN) announced yesterday following media reports of a leak at the plant in China's Guangdong province. France's EDF, which holds a 30% stake in the two-unit plant, said it had been informed of an increase in the concentration of certain noble gases in the EPR reactor's primary circuit.

State news agency Belta and Russian sate nuclear corporation Rosatom said the 1,110-MW unit is operating at nominal output capacity.
The Generation III VVER V-491 plant was supplied by Russia and is the first plant of its type to begin operation outside Russia.
Since it was connected to the power grid on 3 November 2020 it has generated nearly 3 billion kWh of electricity.
Rosatom said a commission in Belarus had signed documents authorising the formal transfer of the plant from the general contractor, Rosatom subsidiary Atomstroyexport, to the owner-operator Republican Unitary Enterprise Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (Belarusian NPP).

Canada's largest oil sands producers have formed an alliance that aims to work with federal and provincial government to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from their operations by 2050. The Oil Sands Pathways to Net Zero initiative will, amongst other things, evaluate and accelerate the application of emerging emissions-reducing technologies including small modular nuclear reactors.

Rosatom will soon submit to the Russian government its plan to invest RUB506 billion (USD7 billion) in new nuclear technologies by 2030, according to Kommersant. Of this, RUB150 will be from the state budget. The plan, dubbed 'New Atomic Energy', was presented for assessment to the working group of the State Council on Energy. If approved, it would be included in the government's socio-economic development strategy for the next decade, the newspaper says.

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries have announced plans to work together on the development of a molten salt reactor (MSR) for marine propulsion and floating nuclear power plants. Samsung Heavy is also carrying out R&D into using ammonia and hydrogen to power ships in efforts to find alternative, low-emission propulsion options.
