Rita Baranwal also urges sector to ‘change way it does business’ Rita Baranwal: ‘Changing the way we operate is going to require a highly trained workforce.’ Knowledge transfer is an especially crucial area for the nuclear energy industry with no adequate system in place to preserve or transfer the experience of retiring designers and developers at existing plants, according to the vice-president of nuclear and chief nuclear officer at the US Electric Power Research Institute.

Rita Baranwal, the US Department of Energy’s former assistant secretary for its Office of Nuclear Energy under the Trump administration, told the 2021 Utility Working Conference that the EPRI’s research and training initiatives take the challenge of knowledge transfer into consideration, and “we have a really unique place in preparing the next generation of workers across roles and organisation levels. We provide them with tools and resources to ensure reliable ongoing operation of the nuclear fleet.”

“Changing the way we operate is going to require a highly trained workforce, and accelerating training initiatives is one of EPRI’s institutional priorities, as it is for the nuclear sector at EPRI as well,” Ms Baranwal said, according to a report by the American Nuclear Society.

Russia is supplying four VVER-1200 units for the new nuclear station Preparations have begun for the construction of the fourth unit at Turkey’s Akkuyu nuclear power station, with a construction licence expected by the end of the year and full-scale construction beginning soon after.

Akkuyu Nuclear, the project owner, said excavations for the reactor building, turbine hall, auxiliary reactor building and other main facilities under way.

“By the end of the year, the construction of the concrete blinding of the reactor and turbine buildings foundation slabs will begin, and afterwards the reinforcement of the slabs will be made,” said Sergei Butckikh, Akkuyu Nuclear first deputy chief executive officer. He said Akkuyu will then be the world’s largest nuclear construction centre, with four power units being built simultaneously.

A legacy radioactive source from a US Department of Energy waste inventory is now being reused more than 40 years after it was put into storage. The collaborative effort to prepare and transport the small neutron-emitting, plutonium-beryllium source from Idaho National Laboratory (INL) to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) takes the 'reduce, reuse and recycle' concept to the next level, the Department's Office of Environmental Management (EM) said.

The UK has launched a consultation on proposed regulations for nuclear-powered ships that would enable UK-flagged vessels to use the power source and international vessels to visit its ports. "The UK is committed to enabling the adoption of new technologies that manufacturers and ship owners may choose to meet legal requirements relating to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore will establish a regulatory framework that will support nuclear-powered ships as an alternative fuel option," said the UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA).

Report is ‘timely reminder that reactors are absolutely vital’ Tom Greatrex said the retirements of existing nuclear stations right across the world mean ‘we need to act today’. Courtesy NIA. The UK-based Nuclear Industry Association has applauded a United Nations committee for calling on policymakers to ensure there is a level playing field for all low-carbon technologies and to invest today in new nuclear power plants.

“This report is a timely reminder that nuclear is absolutely vital if we are to hit net zero as a planet,” NIA chief executive Tom Greatrex said. “Nuclear delivers reliable, clean power, new opportunities for industrial decarbonisation and good, well-paying jobs for a green economy.”

Mr Greatrex said the retirements of existing stations right across the world, including in the UK, mean “we need to act today, or we will lose jobs and see higher emissions”.

Mr Greatrex was responding to a new technology brief from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) which said decarbonising energy is a significant undertaking that will require deployment of all available low-carbon technologies, including nuclear power, but governments must provide positive, long-term policy signals for new reactor development,.

The two-unit Koeberg nuclear power station in South Africa. Courtesy Eskom. US-based Jacobs has  won a contract to carry out essential engineering modifications as part of a $1.2bn programme to extend the operating life of the Koeberg nuclear power station near Cape Town, South Africa.

The project is in preparation for the installation of six replacement steam generators, each weighing about 380 tonnes and about 20 meters long, at the two-unit plant operated by state power company Eskom.

The Dallas company will be responsible for construction management related to modifications to the secondary turbine system. The scope of work includes prefabrication of piping, pipe supports and modification, and piping replacement; installation of onsite scaffolding, rigging and lagging; vessel modifications and strengthening; and replacement of forced air cooler units.
