The International Energy Agency (IEA) has set out a ten-point plan that could enable the European Union to reduce its imports of natural gas from Russia by more than one-third within a year, including maximising generation from existing low-emissions sources such as nuclear. Temporarily delaying the closure of EU reactors scheduled for shut-down over the next year could cut EU gas demand by almost 1 billion cubic metres per month.

Staff to compile new environmental impact statement for Florida facility Turkey Point has two units that began commercial operation in 1972 and 1974. Courtesy FLP. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has reversed a decision to allow a South Florida nuclear power station to continue running for up to 80 years by ordering a new review of potential environmental risks, including those posed by climate change.

According to AP, the NRC issued an order to reverse a 2019 decision by a previous, Republican-led commission to extend Florida Power & Light’s operating licence for the Turkey Point-3 and -4 nuclear power plants, about 40 km south of Miami, until 2052 and 2053. Turkey Point-3 began commercial operation in December 1972 and Turkey Point-4 in September 1974.

The NRC had previously granted FPL an initial 20-year extension that will allow the reactors to run until 2032 and 2033. FPL said in 2018 that it was filing an application for a second 20-year licence renewal, taking the units’ operational lifetimes to 80 years.
