Two new units are first of VVER-TOI type The fourth and last steam generator has been delivered for the Kursk 2-1. Courtesy Rosenergoatom The fourth and last steam generator has been delivered for the Kursk 2-1 nuclear plant under construction in western Russia, state-owned nuclear operator Rosenergoatom said.

In a pressurised water reactor, the steam generators act as heat exchangers where water carrying heat generated from the nuclear reaction is used to turn demineralised water into steam.

Rosenergoatom said the 355-tonne component was manufactured by an Atommash factory in Volgodonsk, southwest Russia.

The company said installation work for the set of four steam generators at Kursk 2-1 is scheduled to be carried out in May and June this year.

Agency task force is reviewing safety aspects of project The water has been treated through a filtration process before being stored in tanks. Courtesy Dean Calma/IAEA. An International Atomic Energy Agency task force reviewing the safety of Japan’s planned discharge of treated water stored at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power station has been in Tokyo to discuss the regulatory aspects of the plan.

The task force met officials from the Nuclear Regulation Authority in Tokyo to discuss regulatory responsibilities, the authorisation process, preparations for environmental radiation monitoring and the NRA’s plans to consult with and involve the public.

In April 2021 Japan announced its policy to gradually discharge more than 1.25 million cubic metres of treated water into the sea, subject to approval from the NRA, an independent regulatory body.

It asked for the IAEA’s assistance to help ensure the project’s implementation. Japanese authorities said there was no practical alternative to releasing the water as storage space ran out. They said there was no risk to human health and that operating nuclear plants around the world release similar water every day.

Two companies have already been working to develop preliminary designs The two companies have already been working to develop preliminary I&C designs US-based Holtec International has signed an agreement with the US branch of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to design and engineer the digital instrumentation and control systems (I&C) for Holtec’s SMR-160 small modular reactor technology.

Holtec said the two companies have been working to develop preliminary designs for the I&C systems under an initial agreement signed some years ago.

The SMR-160 is an advanced pressurised water reactor that produces up to 160 MW electric power and is designed with flexibility to produce process heat for industrial applications and hydrogen. It relies on gravity as the workhorse to operate the reactor and the completely passive safety systems.
