An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Support and Assistance Mission to Zaporizhzhia (ISAMZ) set out for Ukraine on the evening of 29 August to ensure nuclear safety and security at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Earlier that day IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi wrote on his Twitter page: "The IAEA support and assistance mission is already on its way to the Zaporizhzhia NPP. I am proud to be leading this mission, which will arrive at the ZNPP later this week.” He added that "it is necessary to protect the security of Ukraine and Europe's largest nuclear facility”.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings (Tepco) says it will have to delay to late 2023 the removal of melted nuclear fuel debris from the unit 2 reactor at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP while adjustments are made to the robotic arms which will undertake the work. Tepco had initially planned to start the debris removal on a trial basis in 2021 but postponed it to 2022 in face of the coronavirus pandemic.

South Korea has won a major $2.25bn contract with Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom to provide buildings and components for Egypt’s first commercial nuclear power station.

The contract between state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) and Atomstroyexport JSC, a Rosatom subsidiary, includes the construction of 80 buildings and structures at the station’s four units. KHNP will also procure and supply equipment and materials.

In July an official ceremony was held to mark the start of first concrete pouring for Unit 1 of El Dabaa, meaning the country’s first commercial nuclear plant has entered the main construction phase.

El Dabaa will have four Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors supplied by Rosatom under agreements signed in 2015 and 2017. The first unit is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2026.

Country will be second only to France for reactor generation File photo of construction at the Mochovce-3 nuclear power station in Slovakia. Courtesy Slovenske Elektrarne. The Mochovce-3 nuclear power plant in western Slovakia should finally enter full commercial operation at the beginning of 2023 after the country’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority (UJD) gave its approval, Slovenske Elektrarne chief executive officer Branislav Strycek said.

Operation of the new unit, Slovakia’s fifth, could bring the share of nuclear in the country’s electricity generation to 65%, putting it second behind only France, with 69%.

Mr Strycek was speaking in response to a decision by the UJD in which it rejected appeals against the unit’s operation and confirmed an earlier decision allowing it to go ahead.

In a statement on its website UJD said it had received appeals related to the plant’s commissioning, but gave no further details.

“The UJD consistently checked and evaluated all areas, demonstrating the technical and qualitative readiness of the third unit for fuel loading,” said Marta Ziakova, head of the ÚJD. “The readiness of the reactor block for the loading of the first fuel assembly and the start of active tests had to be demonstrated comprehensively in all assessed areas.”
