Tractebel has said it will continue to provide engineering support to South African power company, Eskom, to help extend the operational life of the Koeberg NPP by 20 years, in line with a government decision in 2019. The two 970MWe pressurised water reactors at Koeberg were built by Framatome, and began commercial operation in 1984 and 1985. They generate about 5% of the South Africa’s electricity.

Centrus Energy has announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, American Centrifuge Operating (ACO), has signed a “definitized” contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to pioneer production of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) at its facility leased from DOE in Piketon, Ohio. ACO was selected for the competitively-awarded contract by DOE in November. As part of a previous, cost-shared contract awarded in 2019, Centrus has been deploying its AC100M advanced uranium enrichment centrifuges in Piketon and has secured a licence amendment from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, making it the only NRC-licensed HALEU production site.

Czech energy company CEZ has said that experts have examined the subsoil at the planned site for a small modular reactor (SMR) at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, a few hundred metres from the road linking Hluboká and Týn nad Vltavou. On-site experts determined the type and integrity of rocks by measuring electrical resistances and monitoring the rate of seismic wave propagation from a special vibrating source. They verified the first results using 30-metre-deep wells.

Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) executive vice-president and chief regulatory operations officer Ramzi Jammal said in a 28 November 2022 letter to OPG that the company had met the conditions for the removal of the hold-point and “fuel may now be loaded into the Unit 3 core”.
Hold points are mandatory checkpoints where CNSC approval is required before the licensee – in this case OPG – is allowed to move on to the next stage of the process to return the unit to operation.
OPG said it will now load 6,240 fuel bundles into the Candu 850 reactor core.
In February 2022, OPG said work had begun on the refurbishment of Unit 1 – the third of four nuclear reactors at the site to undergo mid-life refurbishment.
