The UAE's Barakah One Company and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore potential collaboration on new nuclear energy projects in third countries.

Without a significant increase in the deployment of nuclear power, it will be difficult for the world to secure sufficient energy to achieve sustainable development and to mitigate climate change, Mikhail Chudakov, deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said today on announcing publication of the Vienna-based agency's latest projections for energy, electricity and nuclear power trends through 2050.

Lead test assemblies of Westinghouse EnCore fuel rods containing uranium silicide fuel pellets have been loaded into a commercial nuclear power plant for the first time. The fuels, developed through the US Department of Energy's (DOE) accident tolerant fuels programme, were loaded into Exelon's Byron unit 2 during a scheduled refuelling outage.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) and Russia’s Tenex have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding on exploring potential opportunities for collaboration in nuclear fuel cycle management. The new MoU was signed by Mohamed Al Hammadi, CEO of Enec, and Sergey Polgorodnik, general director of Tenex, during the 24th World Energy Congress in Abu Dhabi.

A project to demonstrate the production of hydrogen in integrated energy systems at US nuclear power plants is one of three selected by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to receive a share of USD15 million in its latest announcement of project selectees. At the same time, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has awarded USD15 million in grants to support the development of the country's future nuclear workforce.
