The Australian Nuclear Science & Technology Organisation (ANSTO) has closed its Open Pool Australian Lightwater (OPAL) reactor at the Lucas Heights nuclear medicine precinct to undergo necessary upgrades and maintenance. OPAL is a state-of-the-art 20 MWt multi-purpose reactor that uses low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel. The $300m OPAL reactor, supplied by Argentina’s INVAP, was opened in 2007 with an estimated design life of 60 years.

The RA-10 reflector tank was manufactured by INVAP over 32 months at the Bariloche Atomic Centre. It is made of zirconium alloy and weighs 2540 kilograms, is 2 metres in diameter and 1.4 metres tall.

Argentina’s RA-10 multi-purpose research reactor at Ezeiza Atomic Centre (CAE - El Centro Atómico Ezeiza) in Buenos Aires province, is now about 80% completed, according to project manager Herman Blaumann. "The civil work is already finished and in terms of supplies and installations the progress is 75%. This week the reactor's reflector tank will arrive ... the installation of which is another key step in the work,” he told Argentina's Foreign Minister Diana Mondino during a tour of the facility.

The Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrate Plant (NCCP or NZKhK – Novosibirskii Zavod KhimConsentratov), part of Rosatom’s fuel company TVEL, has signed a contract with the Egypt Atomic Energy Authority (EAEA) for the supply of low-enriched nuclear fuel components for the ETRR-2 research reactor. The products include uranium components, as well as aluminium alloy products and aluminium powder. Delivery will be completed in 2024.

The President of Brazil’s National Nuclear Energy Commission (CNEN - Comissào National de Energia Nuclear), Francisco Rondinelli Jr, during a visit to Argentina, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the President of the Argentine Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA - Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica), Adriana Serquis, to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Saudi Arabia is considering a Chinese proposal to build a NPP. Citing Saudi sources acquainted with the situation, WSJ said China National Nuclear Corp (SNNS) had submitted a bid to construct a nuclear plant in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, close to the border with Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
