Following discussions with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP) has taken action to ensure an immediate supply of back-up electricity in case its main external power line is lost, as has happened repeatedly during the military conflict, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Gross told a press conference during the recent Board of Governors’ meeting that he was very concerned about the situation at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He noted that “artillery activity is almost constant”. IAEA experts based at the plant “have reported hearing numerous explosions over the past week, in a possible sign of increased military activity in the region that could also pose a potential threat to nuclear safety and security at the site, Grossi said in his latest update on the IAEA website.

In his latest update, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said experts have carried out additional inspections and walkdowns at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) over the past week – so far without observing any heavy military equipment, explosives or mines. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) experts have in recent days continued to inspect parts of Ukraine’s Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), without seeing any mines or explosives. They are still waiting to gain the necessary access to the rooftops of reactor units 3 & 4 following recent reports that explosives may have been placed there, Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said, adding that the nuclear safety and security situation remains very precarious.

On 19 October [2022] Russia’s Defence Ministry said the Russian army had destroyed a Ukrainian landing force at Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP), adding that Kiev had lost more than 90 military personnel and 14 boats. "Today [10 April], at about 4 am, Ukrainian forces of up to two companies made another attempt to land troops on the left bank of the Kakhovsky reservoir and seize the territory of the nuclear power plant," the MOD report said. The ministry noted that the Russian forces guarding the outer perimeter of the plant had destroyed the attacking troops. Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main (pro Russian) Council of the Zaporozhye region administration said the battle lasted more than three hours. In addition, Ukrainian Armed Forces had fired US-supplied Himars multiple launch rockets at the operators’ city of Energodar leaving it without electricity.
