Russia’s State Duma recently held a "government hour" with the participation of Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, during which he discussed conditions at the Zaporizhia NPP (ZNPP). He emphasised that physical protection of the station has been restored. “It was destroyed during the withdrawal of the Ukrainian forces,” he said. “A special protective canopy has been created over the used nuclear fuel storage facility, which caused great concern as there were attacks on this site.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has held a series of talks in the southern Russian city of Sochi with President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials including Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev. This Grossi’s second meeting with Putin Russia took control of ZNPP in March 2022 as part of its special military operation in Ukraine. In October 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree formally transferring ZNPP to Russian jurisdiction under nuclear utility Rosenergoatom (part of Rosatom) – a few days before Grossi’s first meeting with Putin in St Petersburg. A Russian Federal State Unitary Enterprise, Zaporizhia NPP, has since been established by nuclear utility Rosenergoatom to operate the plant, which is now being transferred to Russian operating and safety standards.

Slovak power utility Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) hosted a two-day forum, the 5th annual VVER Fuel Forum in Bratislava. The forum on nuclear fuel for VVER 440 and VVER 1000 reactors, which was sponsored by Westinghouse, was attended by representatives of utilities that are potential customers for Westinghouse VVER fuel. These included Ukraine’s Energoatom, Finland’s Fortum, the Czech Republic’s CEZ, Bulgaria’s JE Kozloduy, and Hungary’s nuclear plant operator MVM Paks. The participants exchanged experiences on the procedure for implementing fuel from Westinghouse for operating VVER-440 and VVER-1000 reactors.
