Deal announced as president Macron unveiled ambitious plans for new nuclear France’s EDF has signed an agreement with US-based General Electric (GE) to acquire parts of subsidiary GE Steam Power’s activities related to nuclear steam turbine technology, a joint statement said.

The acquisition will create a global steam turbine equipment and services provider within the EDF group, the statement said.

Under the deal, EDF is seeking to acquire GE Steam Power’s conventional island equipment for new nuclear plants and part of the services business for existing plants.

The deal means EDF would have exclusivity in the purchase of part of GE’s nuclear activity known as “Steam Power”, which includes existing Arabelle steam turbine technology and also technology for future nuclear plants including the next generation of European Pressurised Water Reactors – the EPR2 – and small modular reactors.

The UK government on 15 September approved Electricite de France’s (EDF’s) GBP18bn ($24bn) project to build two Areva-designed European Pressurised Water Reactors (EPRs) at the Hinkley Point C site. However, the government has set new conditions on EDF and its Chinese partner, China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), which is set to invest in Hinkley through its new company, General Nuclear International. The UK confirmed previously that EDF would initially have a 66.5% stake in the project, with CGN taking 33.5%.

EDF Energy on 1 October announced water treatment and waste water company Ovivo as preferred bidder in a contract worth over GBP10m ($15bn) as it prepares to make a final investment decision for the Hinkley Point C NPP in the UK. Two Areva 1600MWe EPR reactor units are planned for the plant.

The board of directors of French turbine and power equipment manufacturer Alstom has recommended the $16.9 billion offer of General Electric for its thermal power, renewable power and grid business. It chose the deal over a rival bid from Siemens and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The French state confirmed that it would grant foreign investment authorization if the deal remains in its current form.

Fennovoima has received commercial bids from Areva and Toshiba for the construction of a nuclear power plant on a Greenfield site in Pyhäjoki, Northern Finland. The Finnish consortium says it will select a supplier for its reactor– to be named Hanhikivi 1– in 2012 or 2013.

The CEO of German energy industry giant Siemens, Peter Löscher, has publicly stated that the company will withdraw its remaining nuclear power offerings and leave the industry. His announcment came during an interview with German newspaper Der Spiegel. Siemens played a major part in the expanding nuclear deployment of the 1970s and 1980s. The Kraftwerk Union technology became part of the entire German nuclear fleet, while reactors were also exported to Argentina (Atucha 2), the Netherlands (Borssele), Switzerland (Goesgen) and Spain (Trillo 1).

Alstom has secured orders worth EUR340 million to rehabilitate and maintain part of EDF’s nuclear fleet in France. Under the terms and conditions of the contracts, Alstom will supply stators for 900 MW and 1300 MW generators, rotors for 900 MW generators and lines of rotors for 900 MW steam turbines.
