Company says nuclear programme would bring numerous benefits to the Polish economy In England, EDF is building two EPRs at the Hinkley Point C nuclear site. Courtesy EDF. France’s majority state-owned energy company EDF has submitted a preliminary, non-binding offer to the Polish government for the construction of four to six EPR nuclear power plants in Poland at two or three different locations.

“On Wednesday, October 13, 2021, EDF submitted to the Polish government a preliminary, non-binding offer for a contract covering the execution of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) works from four to six EPR (European Pressurised Reactors), representing a total installed capacity of 6.6 to 9.9 GW in two to three locations,” the French company said in a statement.

“The initial offering includes all key programme parameters such as plant configuration, industrial schematic, local supply chain development plans, cost estimate and schedule,” the statement added.

EDF said the offer supports the implementation of the objectives of the Polish nuclear energy programme adopted by the Polish government in October 2020. It also aims to define the principles of the Polish-French strategic partnership supporting “an ambitious energy transformation plan consistent with the European goal of carbon neutrality”.

Move follows ‘performance issue’ related to damaged fuel rod claddings Unit 1 at the Taishan nuclear power station in southern China has been shut down for maintenance and to replace damaged fuel. Courtesy CGN. The Taishan-1 EPR nuclear plant in southern China has been taken offline for maintenance and to replace damaged fuel, two weeks after the country’s regulator said it was in “normal condition and operational safety is guaranteed” following a minor fuel rod cladding failure which resulted in increased radioactivity in the unit’s primary reactor coolant.

French nuclear company Framatome, which helps operate the plant, last month reported a “performance issue” which caused the US government to look into the possibility of a leak.

“After lengthy conversations between French and Chinese technical personnel, Taishan Nuclear Power Plant ... decided to shut down Unit 1 for maintenance,” China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) said on Friday in an online statement, adding that “a small amount of fuel damage” occurred during the operation of the reactor.

CGN said that both units of the plant had “maintained safe and stable operations throughout” and the faulty reactor was “completely under control”. The company said there had been “minor fuel damage” and the reactor was shut down for maintenance and to replace damaged fuel.

Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) said on 27 March that fuel loading had begun at unit 3 of the Olkiluoto NPP and was expected to continue for a week. During the months following the fuel loading, the EPR reactor will undergo a range of tests as maintenance and finalisation work continues. These will include hot functional testing, in which the reactor and turbine island will be submitted to dozens of separate tests at different pressure and temperature levels. Previous hot functional testing took place in 2018.

The loading of fuel assemblies into the Olkiluoto 3 (OL3) EPR in Finland began on 27 March, utility Teollisuuden Voima Oyj (TVO) has announced. The move follows the receipt of a permit from the country's Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) the previous day. The process of loading the fuel assemblies into OL3 is expected to take about one week, TVO said.

Delayed Generation III plant scheduled for commercial operation in early 2022 Fuel loading will start soon at the Generation III Olkiluoto nuclear power station in Finland. Courtesy TVO. Finland’s Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (Stuk) on Friday gave a fuel loading permit for the Olkiluoto-3 nuclear power plant with the 1,600-MW Generation III EPR unit scheduled to start up in October and begin commercial operation in February 2022.

Stuk said it had verified plant operator Teollisuuden Voima Oyj’s (TVO) readiness to begin the fuel loading. TVO’s Olkiluoto-3 project director, Jouni Silvennoinen said the permit was the most significant step in the commissioning of the plant unit so far. He said systems have now been rigorously tested and “we will be able to begin fuel loading soon”.

The fuel arrived in Olkiluoto in 2018. During the fuel loading, 241 fuel assemblies, comprising about 128 tonnes of uranium, will be transferred from storage into the reactor’s pressure vessel.

The assemblies have all been manufactured in Framatome’s plants in Germany and in France. Framatome said that to carry out the loading operations, a team made up of approximately 40 employees from TVO, Areva and Framatome has been formed. It includes around 15 fuel handlers, employees specialising in the fuel handling operations, and four neutronics engineers in charge of monitoring the core during loading.

Commissioning of unit 3 at Finland’s Olkiluoto NPP (OL3), has been pushed back to March 2021 by suppliers France’s Areva and Germany’s Siemens, plant operator TVO said on 19 December. According to the information received by TVO, nuclear fuel will be loaded into the OL3 EPR unit reactor in June 2020, the first connection to the grid will take place in November 2020, and the start of regular electricity production will take place in March 2021.
