Belgium has a robust national infrastructure for the management of radioactive waste and used fuel, an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission has said, and recommended the development of consolidated policies for specific waste streams and for decision-making on a geological repository.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Integrated Review Service for Radioactive Waste and Spent Fuel Management, Decommissioning and Remediation (ARTEMIS) team of experts found that Belgium demonstrated commitment to the safe management of its radioactive waste and used fuel. The 11-day mission was carried out at the request of Belgium and hosted by ONDRAF/NIRAS, the Belgian National Agency for Radioactive Waste & Enriched Fissile Material management.

A project to relocate low-level radioactive waste from historic Canadian radium and uranium refining operations to a new, above-ground long-term storage facility has been completed, with the final layers of topsoil and grass placed on the engineered mound, Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced. The capping and closure of the mound at the Port Granby Project Long-Term Waste Management Facility completes a project begun in 2016.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has completed the excavation and transfer of historic low-level radioactive waste away from the Lake Ontario shoreline to a new long-term waste management facility. The waste removal marks a milestone for the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) which CNL is implementing through its Historic Waste Program Management Office on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL).

An extensive EU-funded research project has been launched to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to low doses of radon and other naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) on humans and the environment. The EUR22 million (USD26 million), five-year RadoNorm project involves 56 partners from 22 European countries.

Russia has begun tests of its new Remix (Regenerated Mixture) nuclear fuel at the MIR research reactor at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad. Development of REMIX fuel is part of state nuclear corporation Rosatom's strategy to enable better use of recycled uranium and plutonium on an industrial scale in pressurised water reactors.

Russia's Siberian Chemical Combine (SCC) has fabricated experimental fuel rods with REMIX fuel at its chemical metallurgical plant, the company said. The REMIX (regenerated mixture) fuel was developed by the VG Khlopin Radium Institute in St Petersburg for Techsnadexport (Tenex), the nuclear materials trading arm of state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
