Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) has announced that it has entered into a collaboration agreement with New Brunswick-based ARC Clean Energy Canada, which is working to develop and licence its sodium-cooled advanced small modular reactor (SMR) technology. The agreement, funded through CNL’s Canadian Nuclear Research Initiative (CNRI), includes work to advance the fuel development and manufacturing processes to produce fuel for ARC Canada’s technology.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) plan to leverage data gathered through decades of experience of the storage of used Candu fuel to underpin cooperative research activities under a new Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations. They will engage in knowledge-sharing and other joint activities to advance storage, transportation and disposal practices for used fuel, and to explore opportunities to collaborate on nuclear decommissioning and waste management initiatives.

Nuclear Research & Consultancy Group (NRG) of the Netherlands will conduct a programme of irradiation tests on Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation's (USNC's) proprietary Fully Ceramic Microencapsulated (FCM) fuel at the High Flux Reactor (HFR) in Petten. The aim of the tests is to demonstrate the safety of the fuel for the 20-year lifespan of the USNC's Micro Modular Reactor.

Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) announced yesterday that it has completed all shipments of highly enriched uranium target residue material (HEU TRM) from Canada to the USA, bringing its TRM Repatriation Project to "a safe and successful conclusion". The culmination of nearly a decade of work and planning removes "a major nuclear liability" from the Chalk River Laboratories campus, CNL said.

US-based Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation has established a new facility in Salt Lake City to support the development of the company’s proprietary fully ceramic micro-encapsulated (FCM) fuel.

Materials developed at the new facility will be used in the company’s micro-modular reactor (MMR) and other nuclear reactors, including gas-cooled reactors, light water reactors, Candu reactors, and molten salt cooled reactors.

Salt Lake City was selected partly because the region is home to significant ceramics and materials expertise, central to the manufacturing of FCM fuel. The Salt Lake City Lab augments Ultra Safe’s materials development efforts at the University of Tennessee Knoxville and collaborations with the Chalk River Laboratories.

FCM is a next-generation Triso particle fuel design, replacing the 50-year-old graphite matrix of traditional Triso fuel with silicon carbide (SiC), a material used in tank armour that is extremely resistant to radiation and thermal damage. Triso, a shortened form of the term tristructural-isotropic, refers to a specific design of uranium nuclear reactor fuel.
